coming from a 2021 F-150 Lariat with the 5.0, 61k on it, no complaints except i want something nicer for the next ten years and my wife likes the GMC interiors. test drove a 2024 Sierra 1500 Denali with the 6.2 on saturday at a store in Lexington and the salesman spent ten minutes on Super Cruise. hands off on I-75 to Georgetown and back, it worked, it was a little spooky.

my question is towing. we have an 8,000 lb camper that goes to Cumberland Falls and Lake Cumberland most weekends from May to October. salesman says Super Cruise works with a trailer. salesman also said the 6.2 gets 20 mpg, so.

anybody actually use it hooked up? and what does it cost once the free part is over?

check the sticker on the exact truck before you get attached. on the 1500 Denali Super Cruise has come in a package on some model years and standard on others, and on the Denali Ultimate it is standard. GMC's own trim pages at gmc.com list what is in each package for the current year, but for a used or leftover truck the RPO list on the glovebox sticker is the truth.

on cost, every owner i know got three years included and then the OnStar offer to keep it, which was 25 a month last time somebody quoted it here. do that math against how many highway miles you actually drive.

i have it on an HD Denali Ultimate. honest report: i use it empty on I-75 between Ocala and Gainesville and on the turnpike, and it is very good at that. it watches your eyes with a camera on the steering column, if you look at your phone for more than a few seconds it starts flashing the light bar at you.

with the horse trailer on i drive it myself. not because the truck can't, because my wife won't ride with the truck steering two quarter horses. pick your battles.

from the shop side. to use it with a trailer you have to set up a trailer profile in the trailering app on the screen, and the trailer has to be hooked to the 7 pin so the truck knows it's there. with a trailer on, it will not do the automatic lane changes, you do those yourself. it is also more conservative about following distance and it will hand control back to you sooner in construction zones and on curvy stretches.

the most common "Super Cruise unavailable" complaint i see is a dirty windshield in front of the camera or a front radar covered in bugs. second most common is a map that hasn't updated. not your problem on a test drive, but on a used truck ask whether the map and software are current.

i'll be the old man. a lot of the roads i tow on are two lane with cattle guards and no shoulder, and none of that is mapped for it anyway. if 90 percent of your trailer miles are interstate it's a nice thing. if they're like mine it's a feature you pay for and look at.

that said 8,000 lbs on a half ton is a bigger question than the cruise control. what's the payload sticker on the Denali you drove?

went back and looked. the one i drove has a payload of 1,480 on the door. the camper's tongue weight is about 950 loaded, plus the hitch, plus me and my wife and the dog, and we're near the line before anybody puts a cooler in the bed.

so ranch is right and the question changed. i'm starting to look at a 2500 instead, which also solves my brother's stock trailer problem. Super Cruise is nice and i'll take it if the truck has it, but it is not why i'll buy.

for what it's worth, that move from a half ton to a 3/4 ton for an 8k camper is the right one and you'll stop thinking about wind on I-75 the first weekend. on HD trucks the payload is usually 2,500 plus even on the heavy diesel top trims, so that number stops being the thing you lie awake about.

and the HD Denali has the same hands free system on the newer ones if you want to keep shopping for it.
